Tønsberg Psychiatric Hospital – Timber Façade Elements

Tønsberg Psychiatric Hospital

Location: Tønsberg, Norway
Total Floor Area: 12,000 m²
Main Contractor: Skanska Norge & Skanska UK
Energy Class: A

Tønsberg Psychiatric Hospital consists of two adjacent buildings. The first building provides inpatient care for up to 50 patients and features a rooftop garden, offering a safe outdoor space for patients to enjoy fresh air and leisure time. The second building houses a psychiatric clinic for day patients and administrative functions, containing 400 multi-purpose rooms.

Project Goals

With the involvement of Skanska UK, which has extensive experience in hospital construction and BIM design, the project aimed for:

  • Up to 10% lower construction costs compared to a similar building constructed in 2006.

  • 50% faster construction time for all structural elements than comparable projects.

The construction process relied heavily on factory-produced timber elements and modules, including prefabricated bathroom and toilet units.

Timbeco’s Role

The Timbeco team designed, manufactured, and installed timber façade elements for the new psychiatric clinic. The prefabricated elements included openings, insulation, and wind barrier materials, with the final façade finish applied on-site.

This project is an excellent example of combining steel and concrete load-bearing structures, modular solutions, and timber elements to achieve efficient, high-quality construction.
